Vander Have Grazing Company has registered Thooruna and is currently in the process of developing an Environmental Account to submit for certification.

About the account.

Thooruna is a 4,650-hectare cattle grazing property in Hawkwood, Queensland. The Environmental Account covers approximately 582 hectares of the eastern portion of the property, which includes cleared agricultural land, remnant vegetation, and areas of native regrowth. The primary goal of the Thooruna Environmental Account is to provide comprehensive data on the condition of native vegetation and bird species richness over a 25-year period. The first Account will establish the baseline for these assets ahead of a large-scale reforestation initiative scheduled for 2025, which will cover approximately 350 hectares of the account area. This project will involve planting native tree and shrub species that reflect the local plant communities.

Thooruna offers a valuable opportunity for reforestation, combining carbon sequestration and ACCU generation with the creation of vital habitat for threatened species. With several EPBC Act-listed endangered bird species likely to inhabit the area, the reforestation efforts are expected to expand and enhance suitable foraging and nesting habitats, fostering biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

This project will also serve as a model for other livestock enterprises to demonstrate the benefits of integrating natural habitats into productive landscapes.

About the Account Holder.

The project proponents are a third-generation family beef grazing enterprise in the North Burnett region, with more than 30,000 hectares of land under management. They are passionate about regenerating their landscape for a vibrant and sustainable next generation, while managing a business that supports the local community.

In 2025, the family is undertaking a reforestation project, planting local native tree species seedlings over an area of approximately 350 hectares. With reforestation and regenerative grazing practices, the goal is to grow a landscape that sequesters carbon and improves biodiversity, which in turn fosters environmental and livestock grazing resilience.
