About the account.
Hawick is a cattle fattening property on the South Australian - Victorian border about 50km north of Bordertown. The northern end of Hawick adjoins the Ngarkat Conservation Park of SA, while the eastern boundary adjoins the Red Bluff Flora and Fauna Reserve of Victoria. Both these reserves have been protected to conserve the intact mallee woodland habitat they contain, which in turn supports a threatened Ecological Community (TEC) – the EPBC-listed Malllee Bird Community of the Murray Darling Depression Bioregion. Private conservation areas containing mallee woodland and banksia shrubland also exist to the west and south of Hawick. Rare and threatened woodland bird species such as the Mallee Emu-Wren and Red-lored Whistler have been recorded near the property.
The landholders of Hawick are strong advocates of sustainable use of natural resources. They are interested in understanding the diversity of bird life on their property and the potential for enhancing extensive existing remnant stands of Yellow Mallee and Desert Banksia woodland in the north of the property to provide habitat corridors between the public and private conservation areas that adjoin Hawick.
