About the account.

The Ridgeview block is located in the Flinders Lofty Block bioregion with the junction of three sub-regions - Southern Flinders, Olary Spur and Broughton - occurring on the property. As such, the property can be considered to occur in ecologically transitional country, where diversity of birds and other biota is often maximised.

Ridgeview has been historically a cropping and sheep grazing block. Over the past three decades there has been a gradual shift in management towards taking land out of cropping and focusing on grazing. As a result, there has been substantial regeneration of previously cleared areas with Acacia-dominated woodlands now being found across about 20% of the property. With the return of habitat provided by these woodlands, several bird species have also returned, including the Mulga Parrot, Splendid Fairy Wren, and White-fronted Chat.

The property lies on a plain between Narien Range to the west and Depot Range to the east, which are relatively well forested. A continued return of habitat at Ridgeview would provide improved connecting habitat between these ranges and north to the Willochra Plain for woodland birds.

About the landholders.

Recognising that current farming practices may negatively impact Ridgeview's ecosystem and biodiversity, Tim & Christy Luckraft understand the importance of making changes to ensure the sustainability of their land for future generations. To address this, their aim is to transition currently cropped land to a rotational grazing and spell-based system to produce paddock-raised lamb in a way that maintains the natural landscape and contributes to its improvement. These changes will allow native vegetation to recover, providing habitat to native birds and other fauna.
